Ankieta obejmowała pytania dotyczące wieku, płci, wykształcenia, lokalizacji blizny i rodzaju interwencji chirurgicznej.

Abstract: Introduction As the largest organ of the human body, skin has a protective function. Damage to the skin, such as wounds, burns or surgical interventions, leads to scarring. Although scars are a natural healing process, they frequently have an unsightly appearance and cause discomfort. Despite advances in medicine, the researchers continue to look for measures to minimize the negative effects of surgery, including scarring. Scars, particularly those in visible areas, may affect both the psyche and the quality of life of patients. Aim The aim of this research was to investigate the impact of postoperative scars on the patients’ quality of life. The study evaluates the knowledge regarding scars as well as their subjective impact on various aspects of life of patients after surgical procedures. It also takes into account both the characteristics of scars and their impact on the psychosocial health of patients. Material and methods The study was conducted from October 2024 to January 2025 among members of an online support group for people with surgical scars, using an anonymous online survey. A proprietary demographic survey, the DLQI questionnaire, and a Likert scale were used. The survey included questions about age, gender, education, scar location, and type of surgical intervention. Results 106 individuals with surgical scars participated in the study, most commonly located on the abdomen and lower abdomen (49.06%). Scar location was significantly associated with quality of life – scars in visible areas were more likely to reduce it (p<0.05). More than half of the respondents reported a lack of knowledge about scar treatment and care, which significantly correlated with poorer quality of life, greater severity of skin complaints, and a greater impact of scars on clothing, interpersonal relationships, and sexual life (p<0.001). The majority of respondents indicated that they did not receive sufficient information from medical personnel, with the Internet being their primary source of information. No significant correlation was found between gender and quality of life (p>0.05). Conclusions Patient’s level of knowledge about postoperative scar care is insufficient, and the Internet, not medical personnel, remains the primary source of information. Postoperative scars significantly reduce quality of life, affecting self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and daily functioning, especially when located in visible areas. The results indicate the need for increased education for patients and medical personnel regarding scar treatment and care.
