Abstract: Non-healing wounds may result from a systemic disease, and rarely constitute a separate disease entity. The treatment of this type of wounds is a major challenge for modern medicine, therefore, on the basis of the current research new treatment strategies are constantly being developed. It is essential to determine the epidemiological cause of the wound and, based on that, to implement appropriate steps to promote and improve the healing process. Furthermore, non-healing wounds remain in a persistent inflammatory stage, which represents a great strain for the patient’s body. Thus, it is of utmost importance to adopt a comprehensive approach to the wound, assessing the patient’s general condition, as well as the subsequent possibilities of the wound repair process. Additionally, the effectiveness of the therapy also depends on the dressing, appropriately selected according to the wound characteristics, which will provide optimal conditions promoting healing. If necessary, the wound should be cleaned mechanically using topical antimicrobial agents – antiseptics which effectively combat biofilm, and are safe for the healthy tissues surrounding the wound. Therefore, by means of the combined methods of wound treatment, an improvement and progression in the healing process is achieved, which simultaneously increases the comfort of the patients’ lives and improves their general health.
